Pomona Arts and Humanities...PAH!
where the arts and academic achievement meet
Mission:
The Pomona PAH for the Arts and Humanities develops the creative talents and interests of students in a demanding academic program within Pomona High School.
How the PAH works:
n Students who seek a creative, hands-on, integrated approach to learning fill out an application.
n Students choose a specific arts path in the program -- vocal music, instrumental music, visual arts or theater – or choose a multi-path option that allows them to develop creative skills in multiple arts arenas.
n All students in this special program at Pomona build a foundation in the arts in a survey course their first year in the program. This course provides experiences in all areas of the arts that builds appreciation, understanding and basic, shared knowledge that will be used in future arts and academic courses.
n In core courses, students meet graduation requirements by choosing either honors/AP classes or regular required courses. In either case, they will be in classes with teachers who are trained and specialize in presenting their lessons with both instructional topics and learning strategies that are supported by brain research.
n Prior to graduation, students will complete a capstone project of their choosing to demonstrate what they have learned in the PAH program.
Why choose PAH:
n The PAH is not for everyone. But it is for creative students who seek to develop their artistic talents, fully understand their artistic path and see how the arts are integrated into other academic areas.
n PAH students have a formal mentor relationship with a PAH faculty member and informal relationships with other PAH faculty members who will provide extra support to help them navigate high school and reach their goals for post-secondary experiences.
n Arts are not a frill and, in fact, the PAH’s very existence reflects the research that on SATs and other tests, arts students out-perform students who do not take arts classes. College Board research also shows that the longer a student remains in an arts program, the better the results on college entrance exams.
